CHRISTMAS MARKETS EUROPEAN STYLE!
There’s something about Christmas in Europe that makes me feel like I’ve stepped right into my very own Holiday movie. It’s simply magical and pictures do not do it justice. You can’t hear the music, smell the deliciousness or feel the warmth of GluhWein (warm mulled wine) with pictures. In our quest to experience this magic of Europe at CHRISTMAS, we set out to explore a few Christkindlmarkt (translates to Christ Child Market) also known as Christmas Market. These markets originated in Germany, but are now being held in many other countries during the weeks of Advent. Here’s one building in the town square decorated for Advent.
Some town centers transform as the tail end of the year approaches, signaling the end of the year with a bewitching beginning to the festive season.
VENDORS
I love to shop locally whenever it’s possible. This is the perfect way to find unique vendors that you won’t normally find. Some of these vendors are local to that village or some may drive two or more hours from the countryside to sell their products. You can literally find anything and some! Everything from homemade or artisan cheeses, chocolates, local spirits, all kinds of homemade gifts, wool clothing, knick knacks, holiday decor and antiques to name a few.
Mulled Wine & Food
Mulled wine is a hot, spiced wine (red or white). I know what you’re thinking. Gross! Wrong. It’s delicious, warm spiced wine that dates back to the Romans in the 2nd century. Now it can be found at Christmas markets across Europe, original or spiked w/ rum and amaretto. Check out this version w/ a flaming cone of sugar. Neat twist to a warm treat on a cold, wet evening. In most cases, they serve it to you in a collectors/souvenir mug.
Sweet Treats and Roasted Meats
They love their pork, pastries and chocolate! I’m not advocating that this is good for you, but I am saying Christmas markets only come once a year and you have to try a few new things. My kids loved the roasted pork on the stick w/ a crusty roll on the side. I enjoyed the fresh warm waffles & crepes. My sweet friend and I shared a bowl of warm cheesy pasta w/ bits ham. Talk about ultimate comfort food.
There’s so much more I can say about how unique the European Christmas market experience is. You can spend a week and more, just traveling from Germany, France, Belgium and many more countries. Each one is very different and special. I will wrap up this fun experience with a few more pictures.
Whether you are going out with your family, traveling solo or looking for a great date idea….. THIS IS IT! You can literally find something to please everyone when you visit these spectacular markets. It’s not too late to make plans for this Christmas season, I would be glad to help you make these amazing plans during your Holiday time off or we can start planning for next Christmas and add in a river cruise to the next market destination.
